Two Day Adirondack Chair Course

This is a 2 day course (9am to 5pm each day). During the two days, you make the beautiful Adirondack chair. Using Scandinavian pine you will be building a chair that will last for many years. With step-by-step instructions from a master craftsman, you will be learning how to use a variety of tools including a handsaw, hand plane, jigsaw, spokeshave, bevel, battery screw gun, wood chisel, measuring tape and square.

Working in a fully equipped workshop, meeting a few new people as you work through the class together. You may surprise even yourself at how much you will enjoy the process and taking home your chair will give you a great sense of achievement.

As it’s a two-day course, you have the perfect chance to see some of Hook Peninsula and its spectacular beaches, historic sites and visitor attractions.

Myself and nephew attended a tool sharpening day at Bevel Woodworking. The facilities and teaching were excellent. As I already had some experience of this difficult subject I wasn’t expecting to learn a huge amount in just the day. However we both really learnt a lot and it was very useful indeed. What’s more, Tommy makes it very accessible and interesting regardless of your level of experience. Sharp tools make things so much easier. No option for 6 stars?read more

Can’t believe I managed to make this chair in just 2 days. Tommy is an amazing tutor guiding us all through each step in making the chair. Learned so much using a variety of tools all under the watchful eye of Tommy who is highly safety conscious so no worries on that front. Anyone of any gender and capability can do his courses : nobody will leave disappointed. Tommy is extremely welcoming, patient and encouraging. I never did anything like this before so it was a challenge but so rewarding on so many levels. Ladies : don’t think you can’t do this… I did and I wasn’t alone ?. Highly recommend this course to any beginners out there, looking for a fun course, with the added benefit of taking home a great chair! Tommy had so much patience when teaching me, and I still can't believe that I was using a jigsaw with confidence by the end of Day 2. Lovely calm atmosphere, small friendly group, and great instructor (each step explained in small bites). Will definitely sign up for another one. Just back from an amazing two day course learning to build an andironack chair. As an absolute newbie to woodwork and carpentry, I loved every minute of it. Fantastic 2 day comprehensive course where you learn to use many wood working tools under the expert guidance of Tommy leading to the ultimate prize of your very own Ardironback chair. The ease at which he explains every step is a testement to his skill and love of all things wood. The course is suitable for novice beginners like myself to knowledgeable DIYers. Mar 2018 - Spoon Carving / Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course / Mar 2022 tool sharpening / Jan 2024 Carve a Woodsprite Have just finished the Spoon carving workshop with my friend. It was a great day and I still can't believe that I came home with the beautiful spoons that I made from start to finish! I had absolutely no woodworking skills before this. Tommy was a great teacher, very patient, well organised and easy to get along with. I feel so proud of myself for what I achieved in just one day. I'll definitely be recommending Tommy and his courses to my family and friends. And you never know, I just might do another one :) Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course My friend and I had a really brilliant day making fabulous birdhouses from scratch. This was our second course with Tommy and it was just as good as the first one - the spoon carving workshop. Neither of us had any experience of woodworking but under Tommy's excellent tutoring we both produced stunning pieces of which we are extremely proud. My new birdhouse will take pride of place in my garden and I'm hoping my resident bluetits will use it this spring. We got to learn how to correctly use all the tools needed , from saws to spokeshaves to ribbon sanders, drills and everything in between. The whole day was relaxed and friendly and really enjoyable. I'm already looking to book my next course or 2 with Bevel. Mar 2022 Tool sharpening workshop I brought a load of my grandfathers tools along to see if they were any good and worth sharpening. I was delighted to find out that they were worth doing. It was another great workshop, thoroughly enjoyed it. Jan 2024 Carve a Woodsprite Again this was an excellent workshop. Tommy is a great teacher and is wonderfully patient with everyone. He has a lovely way of getting his points across. I was really delighted to bring home something that was way better than I expected to achieve. I'd like to do it all again.....and I just might!read more

12/12/23' On Saturday the 9th of December, I had my first experience working with wood in the Bevel Woodworking School. I genuinely would highly recommend the courses on offer at the school. The group was limited to eight which allowed Tommy to provide feedback and give pointers. I made a birdhouse on the day, during the process I was able to use a variety of power and hand tools, we were given the space to use the equipment which was all a very high standard. The class catered for all ability levels and there was a lovely atmosphere in the workshop as well as a stove which ensured we worked in comfort and warmth. Just finished the two day course at Bevel Furniture and Woodworking School building the Adirondack chair. The course was really well put together. Tommy is excellent very knowledgeable and very patient and spent time with everyone at each stage over the two days, Tommy only has a maximum of eight ppl on the course which allows him to oversee and guide each student. I just completed the Celtic Hare carving course with my two teenage sons. I would highly recommend this course. Tommy is an excellent teacher, talented craftsman and very easy to get on with. I just completed my first course with Bevel Woodworking School this past weekend and really enjoyed the experience. I can't believe Tommy had no previous experience teaching. He explained everything so anyone could understand, was interesting to listen to and added a little humor for good measure. Booked the sun lounger weekend course with Bevel Woodworking school. From the start of the first day, Tommy’s knowledge on woodworking shone through. He’s a talented guy and really set everyone up to leave with an amazing sun lounger at the end of day two. Tommy’s shared his woodworking experience with everyone in the group and gave time to guide people through their build. I had an amazing June Bank Holiday weekend in Bevel Woodworking School making a beautiful Adirondack chair under the very watchful eye of the expert craftsman and wonderful tutor Tommy Kelly. I was a total beginner. I was aware of the tools but had never used any of them previously. The spirit of camaraderie in the class of 6 pupils was second to none. I found the experience of creating something so beautiful from wood, handcrafted by me, with help from Tommy of course, and amazing experience. I then got to take it home. As the chair wouldn't fit in my car I had it delivered for a very reasonable rate. It was an absolute pleasure to be guided by master craftsman Tommy in the making of one of these terrific chairs. Back again this weekend to complete the workbench course. Both mentally and physically challenging and 2 long days later the bench is complete. This is my fourth course to complete and definetly the most challenging. Tommy however as usual is a great tutor and has great patience (which was definetly needed). Update: March 2023. On the first anniversary of Adirondack 1, I returned to Bevel to make a second. As usual, a warm welcome from Tommy, in his fully fitted workshop with plenty of room for all 8 participants. Two full days of woodwork, banter and plenty of refreshments resulting in Adirondack 2. A large part of the experience is meeting other like minded amateurs - like Barbara 1, Barbara 2, Ken, Pat, George, Lorraine and Noelle. Only 79,980 hours more to get to genius level? Thanks Tommy, Carmel. I'll be back ? ---------- Oct '22 Just returned from my second trip to Bevel Furniture School. As usual the quality of the tools and materials are second to none and Tommy's infinite patience and expertise is guaranteed. PLUS, this time I brought home an awesome free standing Bird table, which I already treasure. They do gift vouchers too - a perfect Christmas/Birthday present? ---------- April 2022. Short Review: Book it, you'll love it, I promise, oh.....and you get to take a quality chair home with you, that you will cherish fo' evah. Longer Review: All I knew when I got to Bevel was that come hell or high water I'd be going home with a chair. What I didn't know was that I'd make new friends and have an insane need to get back there again for more of the same ASAP. As soon as I entered the workshop and met Tommy I knew I was in welcoming, safe hands. The setup in the workshop is fantastic, two to a bench, your own tools, (a little bit of sharing sometimes) oh and that apron to keep the glue off your tuxedo. Safety is paramount, and he has a unique yet subtle way of drumming that into you. There is a kitchen there with unlimited supplies of tea, coffee and biccies, but to be honest, you'll be so engrossed, it'll be a case of kitchen smitchen, like it was for me. Nice clean toilets too - all the comforts of home. The Adirondack chair course took two days, and there wasn't a minute that I was bored, add to that the craic, the learning and the LOL's. There were eight of us and from first meeting we were like old bosom buddies - Team Tommy, if you like. Everyone was so helpful and encouraging, and yes, I finished my chair and so did everyone else. A quality product that I will cherish for the rest of my days. There is just one big problem - it needs a companion, so you know...........! LOVED IT, thank you very much Tommy and Carmel (his financial advisor, Marketing Guru and Project Womanager) One thing to be aware of, when you do one of these courses, do make sure that your car can accommodate what you've made. Tommy will give you the dimensions in advance, it's up to you then to make sure your Fiat Bambino can take it.read more

Just attended the ‘Release the Spirit’ woodcarving course. What an excellent experience. A worthwhile day learning to carve. Having never attempted anything like this before the day was a great overall introduction to woodcarving and gaining experience and knowledge of using gouges and carving tools. Tommy demonstrates each technique throughout and you simply follow the steps. If you think you can’t do this or you have any doubts about your own ability, don’t. Anyone under the guidance of the instructor will be amazed by what they can accomplish in a friendly and supportive environment. Highly recommended.read more

I got this as a present from my 3 children and while the presents have improved over the last few years, this was by far the best so far. Tommy runs an excellent course and is a truly brilliant teacher. His explanations are simple and straightforward. The way he speaks to everyone gives you confidence to work away and lo and behold it turns out right. I must also mention my other classmates who were great to lend a hand if you needed it. I've done three courses at Bevel Woodworking and each one I've enjoyed greatly. As a hobbyist woodworker I'm glad I can spend a couple of days working on a project in a well-equipped workshop and have a finished piece. This is because of the great work that our instructor, Tommy, did to guide us through the project in a thoughtful, accessible, and enjoyable way. This is my second time taking a course with Bevel. I spent two days building a very sturdy workbench that I will likely have for the rest of my life. Participating in a course at Bevel Woodworking School is most definitely a wonderful way to spend a weekend! The course was to make an Adirondack Chair. A gift from my husband and son, I had no idea what to expect and I was both excited and anxious on arrival. I need not have worried! Firstly this is a very professionally run business with safety a priority. The work space is well set out, and everything to hand that is required for the 2 day course and tea, coffee facilities available throughout the day. But it is Tommy that makes this course special, enjoyable and a great learning experience. He shared his expertise and had time and patience for each person, demonstrating, correcting and guiding us in the making of our chairs. It is a challenging 2 days especially, like me, if you've never used many tools before, but by the end I was gaining confidence and was really pleased with my finished chai I am already giving my family loud hints for another course as I would definitely love to go back!! What a wonderful day! Thank you, Tommy. I got a Christmas present of a Woodworking Course to make a Birdhouse, and didn't quite know what to expect. Tommy provides a great mix of professional cabinet-maker, excellent teacher, and friendly atmosphere. I learned to use tools I'd never used before, and found out how to PROPERLY use some tools I'd been misusing... and at the end of a day of "relaxing activity" I was able to take home a birdhouse that I had made myself and that has since been much admired. I'd highly recommend Bevel Woodworking School to anyone who is still thinking of "doing something". As for myself, I'm already looking forward to the two-day course to make my wife an Adirondack chair.read more

Mar 2018 - Spoon Carving / Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course Have just finished the Spoon carving workshop with my friend. It was a great day and I still can't believe that I came home with the beautiful spoons that I made from start to finish! I had absolutely no woodworking skills before this. Tommy was a great teacher, very patient, well organised and easy to get along with. I feel so proud of myself for what I achieved in just one day. I'll definitely be recommending Tommy and his courses to my family and friends. And you never know, I just might do another one :) Jan 2022 - Birdhouse course My friend and I had a really brilliant day making fabulous birdhouses from scratch. This was our second course with Tommy and it was just as good as the first one - the spoon carving workshop. Neither of us had any experience of woodworking but under Tommy's excellent tutoring we both produced stunning pieces of which we are extremely proud. My new birdhouse will take pride of place in my garden and I'm hoping my resident bluetits will use it this spring. We got to learn how to correctly use all the tools needed , from saws to spokeshaves to ribbon sanders, drills and everything in between. The whole day was relaxed and friendly and really enjoyable. I'm already looking to book my next course or 2 with Bevel.read more

I have recently completed a two day course at the Bevel Woodworking School to make an Adirondack chair. Having had no previous experience of woodworking, I was a bit daunted of what I could achieve but I needn't have worried. Under the patient and attentive eye of Tommy Kelly, I was taught how to use a wide range of tools and managed to produce a chair that I am extremely proud of and look forward to using for years to come. I just completed the Adirondack Chair making course. Despite my ham-fistedness and lack of skills I now have a really good chair. People have sat in it and it hasn't fallen apart, most believe I bought it somewhere. Tommy is a miracle worker and can teach anybody. Don't worry if you don't know a jigsaw from a plane. Tommy delivers clear personalised instruction that he tailors to your ability and to your thought process. You will go home with a chair that you probably imagined you could not make. But the course with Tommy is so much more than 'simply' making a chair. It is a chance to evaluate how you approach tasks in life. It is about a shared fun experience with strangers. It is a bit of a life lesson that Tommy delivers in an insightful and entertaining way. Attended the spoon carving course last week. Carving a spoon may seem trivial, but its a great way to get and introduction to hand carving wood. The course was to the point, well run and interesting. The attention to safety, in particular, impressed me. No hesitation in recommending this to anyone who wants to learn about using hand tools, or about timber.read more

I recently spent a weekend with Tommy making an Adirondack chair. It was the first time I have ever made a piece of furniture, and I was completely delighted with the result, and the whole experience. Tommy took a group of about 8 of us with differing levels of ability, though a perfectly enjoyable learning experience. We all made near-perfect chairs, and Tommy's good humour and steady guidance made for a wonderful weekend and some new friends. Making a beautiful piece that will last a lifetime is extremely satisfying. I'm already booked, along with some of my classmates, onto our second course with Tommy. This time we're making a workbench. I cannot recommend Bevel Woodworking School highly enough.read more

Completed the Adirondack chair course with Tommy on the w/e of 28th Aug 2021. Really enjoyed the course, Tommy was a fab teacher, very patient, and very helpful to a beginner like myself! Built my confidence in starting off doing some woodwork and learning new skills and the use of new tools. Everything was. Token down into small steps for easy learning and I came away with a lovely chair now taking pride in my garden! Went on the weekend Adirondack chair course. Really enjoyed it, the instructor Tommy was very clear, told you exactly how to do simple things. Like he demonstrated sawing, what position your arm should be in, how to start the cut, what people generally do wrong. He had a good sense of humour too which made the class a relaxed and enjoyable experience. I managed to make the chair and was quite proud of my accomplishment. The group were great, we'd have a chat over coffee, and you go and have lunch together at a cafe down the road. I would definitely recommend this even for complete beginners like myself.read more

Tom’s considerable experience facilitated an excellent journey, along which tool tips and tricks abounded, on finishing I was left with both a sense of learning and achievement. The achievement preserved in the final chair. It is a well thought out course which introduced us to tools, tool use, timber handling tricks and assembly. With my decidedly poor experience with woodworking and assembling flat packs I approached this course with some trepidation. I needed have worried. Tommy took myself and my wife Deirdre in hand and with his easy manner, good humour and expertise over the 2 days brought us through all the steps and I am now the very proud owner of my newly created sun lounger. At the weekend I completed a course on Marquetry which I really enjoyed. I have done other courses at Tommys workshop making larger things but what was extra special about this was its a craft that can be carried on at home with a minimum of tools and space . A kitchen table and a box for the veneers is all your need to produce impressive pieces. People might be put off thinking you need Artistic skills, but to start you off Tommy has patterns of many images to work from . It was a day well spent . Thanks Bevelread more

I completed the lounger course in August. The work areas were well apart and safety masks were offered on arrival. Tommy was direct and practical with his advice. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed throughout the two days. As a novice woodworker it was great to see how a spokeshave and bench plane could shape the wood to create the chair. The Adirondack 2-day course at Bevel woodworking school was an absolutely fantastic experience. I only wish that the course could have run longer, because I was enjoying it so much. Tommy is an excellent teacher and despite the fact that we were creating a chair in just two days, it was a very relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The chair itself is a wonderful design and to be able to say you made it yourself is a great feeling indeed. To anyone who is looking at the courses at Bevel and are undecided, I can honestly say you won't regret it. Doing a course like this is great anyway, but having the opportunity to be taught by an artisan like Tommy is an experience not to be passed up. I just spent a fantastic 2 days making an Adirondack chair at Bevel Woodworking School. I couldn't recommend this course enough. Tommy is an excellent teacher- informative, helpful and patient. I was a complete beginner, with zero experience using tools but Tommy made it fun and enjoyable! This was the first course Tommy has run since Covid and I felt all precautions were taken to ensure our safety. Everyone had their own tools and work benches allowing for social distancing. Hand sanitizer and wipes were also provided. I will definitely be returning to do another course!read more

Without a doubt a five star weekend of woodworking. My wife and myself made two Adirondack chairs. It’s a great course for couples. Tommy is an excellent teacher and very understanding, no one is pushed too hard and my wife and myself had no experience of woodworking. It was a very satisfying and I must say therapeutic. I did a two-day course at Bevel Woodworking School in August 2020. It was excellently run and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to anyone even if you have no previous experience of using the tools. Tommy is a super teacher and very patient. I agree with the other reviewers on the their positive reviews. This was the first course since Covid and the workshop was very well set up with hand sanitiser and wipes on every bench, at the entrance and in the kitchen area. There was a sink in the workshop too so no excuses not to wash those hands frequently! The workshop is spacious and has a high ceiling so we were all well distanced. I'd recommend Bevel School whether for one, two or a group of people. If you're doing the Adirondack Chair course make sure it'll fit in your car to take it home :) I hope to be back to do another course with Bevel - maybe even a second chair!read more

Excellent way to spend a day or two, using your hands to make something, a chair or a carving. In today's culture of computers and electronics, it's great to be able to do something with your own hands and some wood cutting tools. One of the best hands-on courses I have attended. I booked a weekend for my wife and I to each take on the Mackintosh Ingram chair. Tommy has a great blend of tutoring in place that allows you to skill up very quickly, while also able to get support from him on the complex pieces. All this is done with Tommy's great sense of humour and a lot of patience, as there were 8 of us there that weekend. We had no woodwork experience going in and really enjoyed the challenge of completing the chair. You will be surprised how much you can pick up in such a short time. The setup in the workshop was perfect, couldn't fault it. Would highly recommend any of the courses on offer from Tommy.read more

I booked the Adirondack chair course after seeing the chairs over the years at Hook Lighthouse and promised myself I would do this one day.. Well I did this weekend and I couldn't have been more pleased I did so. Tommy is great teacher from start to finish from explaining the process of to how to handle the tools Using the tools and turning lengths of timber into a finished and somewhat comfortable chair. Do it you won't be sorry! Great teaching ,great company. New skills what's not to like. I will be back for sure in the near future be it carving or making something else Tommy has to offer I can be sure of a good time again....read more

I was in at the deep end, with a lot of information given out at once. So, I focused on keeping up with each stage and not worrying too much about the bigger picture. It was terrifying and exhilarating and one of the best things I've done in years. I gained experience with hand and power tools which I really wanted. There was 8 in the class & we all meshed well and helped each other when possible. At the end of the 2 days we all had completed the Chair. I look at mine & I can hardly believe I made it. It's a beautiful piece of furniture. I plan on finishing mine with Danish oil, which will subtly highlight the beauty of the beach. I'm making an upholstered cushion for the seat. The instructor is an experienced patient and passionate teacher, generous with his time and humourous. I would love to do another, preferably longer Course in Bevel Woodworking School. I hope to do so before too long.read more

Brilliant. Tommy is a rare tutor, his expert eye watches over you while also giving you room and encouragement to forge ahead yourself (with classical music, the background soundtrack). 5 of the 8 of us had no previous experience with woodwork and yet somehow (miraculously) we all ended up with a beautiful Argyle chair to take home after the weekend. I found it an empowering experience, being guided to use the woodwork machines, and the chisels, saws and different planes. It was such fun and overall, a fantastic experience. I’ll return.read more

Best weekend I’ve had in years. Haven’t stopped raving about it since I finished the course. I couldn’t rate this highly enough. Tommy - the instructor - was excellent. Really helpful, engaged - and patient!! The classes are small and you get to really learn about woodwork - it’s a really enjoyable experience. You get your own working area with all relevant tools to complete your project - all top notch. Even if you know nothing about carpentry, you will be an “expert” by the end of the weekend. This was my second time doing a course with Tom and I must say the experience gets better. I've completed the Adirondack chair and bird house. I have no knowledge of woodworking but I completed and am so pleased with the end products, both items are top class pieces. I did the Celtic woodcarving course last weekend and it was brilliant. Tommy is a great instructor, the equipment and materials were topnotch, the pace of the day was perfect and catered for all skill levels, the group was very nice and the lunch in the nearby cafe was great and very efficient (Tommy rang in our orders ahead of time) - great value for money, great fun, and highly recommended.read more

I booked onto a weekend course to make an Adirondack chair a couple of weeks ago. Spur of the moment decision after seeing the chairs on display at the Hook Lighthouse. I would say I've always had curiosity about woodwork but no prior experience. I didn't do any woodwork in school. The weekend was really enjoyable. To be handed a stack of wood on a Saturday morning and walk out with a solid chair you made yourself on the Sunday evening is incredibly satisfying. Class sizes are small which is what I wanted. Tommy is very personable and a great teacher. He explained each of the different tools and the correct technique for using them. He also gave very clear instructions for each part of the process along with 1-to-1 help and guidance. I've come away from the weekend, firstly with an amazingly comfortable chair, but also with new-found skills, knowledge and confidence. I'd recommend it to anyone and I definitely hope to come back for another course when I'm in the area again.read more

I attended the Celtic carving course led by Tommy. It was really well organized and focused on learning by doing, with expert tips from Tommy as well as opportunities to learn from ones mistakes. I had never taken woodworking classes before but have an interest in crafts in general. Tommy made the learning experience fun and exciting, didn't even feel the time fly by, we were all too absorbed by the activity. Such a relaxed atmosphere and at the end of the day it was a great feeling to have your own finished carving as a souvenir.read more

Signed up for the Adirondack Garden Chair, 2 day weekend workshop as a novice, with zero experience of working with timber. It was such an enjoyable process to be tutored through every step towards producing what I know will be not only a seat, but a talking point in my garden for years to come. I attribute my success entirely to Tommy' tutoring, for his skill and expertise, patience, steely nerves and good humour. End product was a beautiful Adirondack chair, but I gained much more in instruction and development in using various types of woodworking tools and techniques. I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend course making beautiful Adirondack chairs. I had practically zero woodwork skills and over the course of the weekend learned how to use tools like a jigsaw, drill, plane, spoke scrape and chisel correctly, all while completing a wonderful chair. Tommy is a patient teacher and is there to help and encourage when needed but also empowers you to believe you can complete the project yourself. What a wonderful experience at Bevel Woodwork School for the Celtic Carving class last weekend. I loved every second of it. Was lucky enough to attend both the Carve a Wood Spirit and Build a Birdhouse workshops last weekend at Bevel Woodworking School. Great day with Tommy in Bevell Furniture. Tommy has the patience of a saint! Didn't know what a chisel was never mind ever having used one but at the end of the day went home with a wood spirit that I was happy with. It doesn't matter which piece you decide to make, the day or days spent here will give you great enjoyment and a sense of achievement that you will be proud of. Just completed the two day Adirondack chair course with Tommy and 8 others. It was a great experience. Lots of opportunities to practice using a range of tools including jigsaw, large and small planes, spokeshave, electric drills and screwdrivers, chisel etc. Lots of measuring, cutting etc. Lots of practical tips from Tommy and a very friendly and supportive group. And a lovely chair to bring home in the car!read more

I spent a wonderful day with Tommy and a great group of people. Most of us had never touched a chisel in our lives. Tommy is a patient teacher and encouraged us all the way. Myself and my wife attended Tommy's Adirondack chair weekend some time back and we both agreed that it was on of our best weekends in years. Tommy has the patience of Jobe and the knowledge and experience of a true craftsman. Tommy is a really great teacher providing hands on training, advice, encouragement and making it all a fun experience. Our boundaries were pushed a very long way but everything was totally in control and utterly absorbing. The 2 day course was planned in great detail and every aspect of the task was covered. The facilities and the tools supplied were fantastic. With his calmness, patience and advice Tommy made it an experience that was wonderful to be part of and we came home with 2 beautiful chairs which have pride of place now on our deck. An absolute brilliant course. Could not fault it in the slightest. Tommy was an excellent teacher. He introduced everyone very well and no one felt left out. Just completed the 2 day Adirondack Chair course (11/12 Aug) and enjoyed every minute. We jumped straight in and cut the first chair pieces using a jigsaw at our work benches, then used planes, drills, screwdrivers, set squares, etc which I had never touched before but soon felt at ease with the tools. Tommy explains each step but gives individual attention when/where needed. Our group was lovely and good fun. The two days flew by. Result - a great sense of achievement, I'm very proud of my chair! Just come back from a weekend making an Adirondack chair and can’t recommend it highly enough. Challenging, tiring work that leaves even a complete novice like me feeling like I’ve really accomplished something. I did the chair making course with my mam a few weeks ago. I signed up as my mam is interested in wood working. I had no experience and no previous interest but i really loved it. Although it's a tiring two days it's thoroughly satisfying. To get from what we started with to a finished chair is jusy awesome. Tommy is a great teacher - patient and encouraging and the whole workshop is set up incredibly well. I still haven't stopped showing people photos of me in my new chair. Yay! I’m the proud owner of a very comfortable Adirondack Chair- made under the faultless guidance of Tommy at Bevel Furniture School. The two day workshop was time efficient and focused and the small group size meant that help and guidance were readily available. No woodworking experience was necessary and each of the 8 of us completed our chair over the weekend course. I am a complete beginner and Tommy guided me and the rest of the group patiently through the whole process, we learned how to use power tools which was a bit scary but Tommy always had a careful word and eye regarding safety. What a wonderful experience. You really do not need to have any woodworking experience. And yet those with some, learn different tool experience. And how is this done. Thoroughly enjoyed the Adirondack Chair course on April 14/15 and came away with my first piece of timber art which I will enjoy for many years to come. Today I attended a woodcarving course held in National Heritage Park by Bevel Woodworking School. We were taught how to carve a wood spirit into a piece of timber. With no previous experience I was a bit apprehensive but this was put at ease as Tommy guided us through every step of the process. It wasn't long until our sculptures were revealed before our eyes. Over all this was a fantastic experience and would highly recommend the course. I'm delighted with my finished piece and he makes a great focal point in the garden ????????read more

Absolutely loved the experience of the Bowl Carving course in Bevel. Unbelievably, with no experience at all I left with a beautiful bowl carved with my own two hands. Tommy is amazing, such a genuine and interesting guy and a fantastic teacher; he managed the different speeds of working between the group perfectly and explained each step so well and so simply that it was impossible to go wrong. I arrived at Tommy's bird house making class yesterday a tad anxious having no previous knowledge or experience of woodwork. Over the course of the day I used tools and equipment I never heard of, never mind handle before and I left on my journey home with a beautiful redwood birdhouse and a sense of pride in my finished work. I was one of a class of six and from start to finish Tommy was most encouraging and at all times positive. He provided everything needed for the project and his instructions were simple and clear. The atmosphere was very relaxed and tea/coffee was available with a sugar fix of biscuits or fruit for the more health conscious. I would not hesitate to recommend Bevel Woodworking School to a novice.read more

The two day woodworking course which I recently completed a Bevel woodworking School was one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences I have ever had. I did the course with my son who is 25 and it was an incredible adventure to have together. Tommy is a great teacher. He is patient and very encouraging and enjoys a challenge, teaching me was definitely a challenge! If you want to have a new challenge in your life and you want to meet new people in a friendly environment then this is the place for you. I have never done any form of wood work in my life and yet at the end of two days I had created a beautiful chair that I will have for life. It will be a memory shared with my son that I will cherish for the rest of my life. If you have even the slightest inclination to do something new and have lots of fun then I can only say, sign up for one of Tommy's courses. You will never regret it. A great experience. Tommy is a great teacher. That atmosphere is relaxed with the wood burner and classic fm in the background while you learn special woodwork skills. I only have limited carpentry skills and was daunted at first at what I was being asked to construct. But the teacher, Tommy, has an excellent empathy with his students and explains everything in basic easy to follow steps. You don't need any carpentry skills whatsoever to do his courses. He can teach and he puts you at ease through humour and just an easy going atmosphere. I made a really good chair which is easily worth half the amount I spent on this course. So divide the course fee by two - that's the actual cost. Also, there's a lot of talk about mindfulness at the moment. This is a real experience of mindfulness. All preoccupying thoughts went out the window and for two days I was just focused on the most ancient of wood skills. Chiseling, planing, sanding, measuring, joining - it's all utterly absorbing. This course is more than it seems - it's brain gym, flow, mindfulness, creativity and pushing yourself beyond your limits. Plenty of food, plenty of coffee and lovely heat from the wood burning stove. A fantastic winter experience!read more

Two glorious days away from it all and into the bargain you leave with a fabulous Adirondack chair to spend many happy hours relaxing in on your patio or in your garden. I've finished my second course and second chair a couple of weeks ago and I am definitely going back to Bevel to do another course and make something else. Tommy has a very professional set up. Each student has their own bench and tools. All of the tools have been carefully sharpened and prepared by Tommy in advance of the course starting. The atmosphere is relaxed and Tommy is a natural teacher with a very easy way of imparting information and tips. The courses are suitable for any level and it doesn't matter if you don't have any experience - you will leave with a finished article and with the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself. 5* experience! Just finished the two-day Adirondack chair course and I'm thrilled with the final product. Tommy is the heart and soul of the course. He gives clear, precise instructions while fostering a real sense of excitement and achievement among his students. He has endless patience, especially with those of us who haven't a notion what they are doing. Novices, fear not! This would be a great course for corporate team building exercises. chair making course. Great time learning various techniques (sawing, chiseling, flat planing, spoke shaving and countless tips on measurement etc) very well explained by Tommy. Tommy is a great teacher and is a natural with the class. Hadn't done any woodwork since school and had no trouble. Tommy has designed the course so every level of ability can be challenged yet achieve the same end point. Tommy is very patient and well able to teach novices. A lovely sturdy garden chair now provides great satisfaction to sit out during the summer.read more

Highly recommend the bird making course. Our group was a mix of men and women and from the ages of 9 to 63 and everyone enjoyed it just as much as the other. Tommy was so clear in his instructions and the finished piece was really something to be proud of. The whole day was great fun while learning new skills with a great teacher. The whole group agreed that they will be back again!!read more
